History of Jari & Cords
The art of Zari, also known as Jari, is an intricate form of embroidery that involves weaving threads made of fine gold or silver into fabrics, primarily silk1. The word ‘Zari’ is believed to have originated from a village by the same name in ancient Persia (today’s Iran), where artisans used this skill to weave thin threads of gold and silver onto fine silk fabrics1.
This art was brought to India by Persian migrants between 1700-1100 BC, during the period of Rig Veda1. However, Zari work flourished in India during the Mughal era, especially under the patronage of Emperor Akbar2. The port of Surat was linked to the Meccan pilgrimage route, which served as a major factor for re-introducing this ancient craft in India3.

Pearls: These were often used to add a touch of luxury and elegance to the embroidered piece.
Beads: Beads of different sizes, shapes, and colors were used to create intricate designs.
Silk: Silk threads were commonly used for their smooth texture and lustrous appearance.
Linen: Linen was another popular material due to its durability and versatility.
Wool: Wool threads were used for their warmth and variety of natural colors.
Embroideries were worked primarily on two types of foundation fabrics: off-white silk in satin weave and undyed linen in plain weave, referred to as canvas. The embroidery technique determined the choice of foundation fabric. Tent stitch, cross stitch, and Gobelin stitch were worked on canvas.
It’s fascinating to see how these materials have been used throughout history to create beautiful works of art!
